Interpretive Centre from Seafloor to Summit

The Seafloor to Summit is a fascinating dramatic contrast. Standing high atop Sulphur Mountain surrounded by towering alpine landscapes, visitors come to realize they are standing on what was once the bottom of an ancient tropical sea. The exhibit creates a powerful sense of perspective, turning the beautiful scenery into a story of immense geological transformation that spans hundreds of millions of years and forever changes how people view the mountains around them.

Interpretive Centre from Seafloor to Summit

The From Seafloor to Summit exhibit inside the Banff Gondola interpretive centre takes visitors on an extraordinary journey through deep geological time, revealing how the dramatic mountain landscapes surrounding Banff were formed over hundreds of millions of years. The exhibit helps transform the stunning scenery visible outside into a much deeper story of ancient oceans, shifting continents, and powerful natural forces that shaped the Canadian Rockies.

Visitors begin by learning that the towering peaks surrounding today's Banff were once buried beneath a warm shallow inland sea that covered much of western Canada long before the mountains existed. Ancient marine organisms, coral systems, shells, and layers of sediment slowly accumulated along the seafloor over immense stretches of time, creating thick limestone deposits that now form much of the visible mountain rock throughout the region.

The exhibit then follows the enormous tectonic forces that eventually pushed these ancient seabeds upward as continental plates collided, slowly folding and lifting the earth's crust to begin creating the early Rocky Mountains. Over millions of years, glaciers, erosion, wind, water, and extreme weather continued sculpting the sharp ridgelines, deep valleys, cliffs, and rugged peaks visitors see today.
